Southampton, 1963

Part of the GRAND VOYAGE experience is getting to explore where these magnificent machines visited and existed in! One of the most legendary passenger liner ports in the world is Southampton, and at launch players will be able to explore a section of this fascinating environment at their leisure.

Looking due North into the centre of town. Iconic Southampton buildings are still being modelled for this environment.

Southampton went through a huge amount of change in the years 1900 to 1960, and this representation of Southampton will show it in 1963, the year the cruise liner Lakonia departed on her ill-fated final voyage. Players will be able to explore the beautiful Ocean Terminal building alongside Lakonia and learn about this exciting time in modern history.

Looking east at the estuary of the River Itchen and various dock complexes.

Lead developer Matt and 3D modeller Matteo have put hours of hard work into figuring out the complex and labyrinthine Ocean Terminal building, which was a prewar design only completed after the Second World War had ended. Sadly this glorious art deco building was demolished just before the British cruise industry began to boom in the 1980s and is now lost to time.

Looking south-west over the Empress Dock you can spot cargo ships moored and the twin funnels of a liner tied up.
